Roundup is an herbicide manufactured by Monsanto that is used on 65 percent of major U.S. crops. Its key ingredient, glyphosate, has been labelled as a probable cause of blood cell-related cancers.
A branch of the World Health Organization classified glyphosate as “probably carcinogenic in humans” based on human, animal and in vitro studies. Specifically, exposure to glyphosate was linked to an increased risk of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Researchers have observed anywhere from a 41 to 70 percent increased risk for non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma after prolonged exposure to Roundup.
Edwin Hardeman sued Monsanto in 2016, arguing that his cancer was caused by Roundup, which lacked any kind of warning that Roundup could cause cancer. Hardeman won an $80 million jury verdict against Monsanto in spring 2019, with a unanimous jury finding that his cancer was caused by Roundup and by Monsanto’s failure to warn of the known dangers of its product.
